John Glaser, founder and managing director of Compass Box Whisky Company, is probably the most transparent person in the whisky industry, always willing to reveal formulas of his blended and blended malt whiskies. He believes that the secret lies in the quality of the casks thus he uses predominantly first fill American oak casks. Asyla is one of the first John’s creations, its formula consists of 50% of Cameron Bridge aged in first fill ex-bourbon barrels, 5% of Glen Elgin aged in refill hogsheads, 23% of Teaninich and 22% of Linkwood both aged in first fill ex-bourbon barrels. The word ‘Asyla’ is plural for asylum, a word rich in ambiguity suggesting that delicate balance between madhouse and sanctuary.
